e-Patient Dave: ‘I want the best people … to thrive’

You are in for a treat. We were pleased to have Dave deBronkart, better known by his pseudonym, e-Patient Dave, as one of our two keynote speakers at this year’s St. Luke’s Health System Summit.

Dave has become a leader in participatory medicine since he was diagnosed with terminal renal (kidney) cancer. Dave engaged in e-health, seeking to learn more about his cancer and his options online, and an online patient support network steered him to a newer, more hopeful treatment than the one recommended to him.

Dave’s position is that no matter how good physicians are, they can’t possibly know everything, that patients should partner with their physicians on information and decisions, and that the physician is best situated to help a patient know whether specific information is helpful or not. In Dave’s case, physician partnership saved his life.

Enjoy this video of e-Patient Dave’s presentation. He got high marks from those who attended our Summit. Thanks, Dave!

  • And thank you for having me. Working with this organization is a real pleasure, sincerely. You inspired new thoughts, things I’d never said before. And that, too, is effective partnership.

  • Wow. Amazing presentation. I shared it on my FB account.

I am so proud to be part of St. Luke’s, an organization that is a part of the solution.

  • Thanks, Dr. Payne! I have received many similar comments. I am glad that this presentation was so meaningful for our physicians. The reason that we can be part of the solution is that we have so many physicians who share our vision. Thanks for being one of them!
